Ship Island the Story of a Mermaid

Reading Ship Island I found some perplexities, because I did not found a clear plot, for instance who is Nancy? is she the mermaid?
In its complexity the architecture of this tale is well detailed in particular the description of the environments.
I think that the most significative line is the following:
"The French book was lying open on a corner of the dining room table, between the floor lamp and the window"
Immediately then I felt the sensation of being trapped in that book where the time has been stopped by a supernatural force, the only thing that I was able to do was watching outside the window the flow of the other live.
Continuing in the reading I noticed that there are some poetical passages.
Cheers
Italo
