Design and Structure in the Dubliners
University of Exeter - The Art of Short Story
Look again at “Araby” “Eveline” “Clay” “Ivy Day in the Committee Room” Are you
convinced that Joyce’s classifications of the stories is adequate to describe their structural
function with the total cycle? Do you have an alternative way of classifying them with a
structure?
In my opinion the design and the structure of the Dubliners is like a puzzle where every piece has
its unique and exclusive position, for this reason I have not a different classification.
The main motivation should be the development and positioning of the so called epiphanies they
have been structured in other to link the different (apparently) stories.
In Araby emerges the secular hate btw Catholics and Protestants, as a strong reaction against the
British Empire and their expansionistic policy, where the boy has been influenced in favor of the
British’s culture.
A clue is when he reacts in a stereotypically British Way, for instance the acceptance of the old and
pervert man due to is educated accent, in other words the boy prefers this old man rather than to
accept a supposed “moral superiority” of the poor classes.
In Eveline I notice not only her apprehension of a new life in a new continent but also the religious
dogma of the man as the image of God, describing Eveline as a woman that works hard in house
and in business.
In my opinion she is also terrorised by the idea that her love one day should became a violent
person, in the past her father was a pleasant person too for instance,“She remembered her father
putting on her mother’s bonnet to make the children laugh.”
Reading “Clay” and “Ivy Day in the Committee Room” there is an analysis of his mature life in
Clay the main symbol is the Halloween party as a synonymous of an early death.
In “Ivy Day in the Committee Room” there is a detailed, controversial and corrupted description
of the political and religious classes, a probably implicit message should be the following:
In other to avoid this situation a society based on atheism will be better or worse?
