Tempera and gold on wood

Cosimo Rosselli (Italian, Florence 1440-1507 Florence)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 606

Description:

In this painting, the Madonna is not seated but she stand up with her son, with his feet on a white balustrade, he is naked and with his right hand is blessing the observers, while his mother looks very seriously as to say that this scene is very important.

On the left hand there is the globe. Mother and son are under a refined loggia composed of columns painted with a marbled effect and surmounted by Corinthian capitals.

This sacred scene is set in a mountain place, where two angels picked the alpine stars for the Madonna and her son.
