Oil On Canvas
1888
Vincent Van Gogh, Dutch painter, post-Impressionism
Amsterdam, (NL) Van Gogh Museum
Description:
In this painting dense of colors, the main actor is the sea which washes the coast of the fishing village of southern France called Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the sea is rough and the sailboats are at the mercy of the winds, the light change continuously and the colors are affected.
While Vincent Van Gogh was painting it pronounced an epic phrase:
The Mediterranean sea "has a color like Mackerel, in other words, changing - you don't always know if it's green or purple - you don't always know if it's blue - because a second later its changing reflection has taken on a pink or grey hue."
