David Gavender is Blaise and Harriett's son

Montague Small is a friend of Blaise, he is a novelist, he tells both how to behave in a period of deep crises.

He will say to Harriet that her suffering will improve the love with Blaise, who is incapable of choosing who to love.

Sophie Small was the wife of Monty, she still affects him deeply.

The plot is very simple, but not the consequences of the main characters, each action has a consequence that implies that they aren't completely free.
