philosophical point of view, the friar's dilemma is interesting: whether to
hand Isabella over to the despot to save the life of his son Theodore, or not?
The cause
of the death threat to his son is due to his refusal to marry Isabella to
Manfred since it was clearly a marriage of convenience.
Without the
advent of a supernatural event, what decision would he have made?From a

True love
is represented by Isabella who, knowing that Theodore loved Matilda madly,
decided to ease the pain with more love.
In my
opinion the battle between good and evil cannot be win without the divine
intervention.
